From November 26-28, the EFFORT consortium will present results of a 5-year research programme on the transmission of antimicrobial resistance from animals to humans through the food chain. The meeting will be opened with keynote lectures by Prof. Louise Fresco and Prof. Mark Woolhouse ‘’setting the scene’’ with their views on the future of livestock farming and the effect of antimicrobial stewardship in animal production.
There will be presentations on management tools for containment of antimicrobial resistance developed by WHO. Participants will learn about current and future ranking of the Critically Important Antimicrobials by WHO, OIE and EU, presence of resistance genes in animal production, association between antimicrobial use in animals and resistance in animals and humans, and which interventions are (economically) effective. In the last session, stakeholders (national and international policy makers, primary production, consumer organization, food industry) share their views on future policies regarding antimicrobial use.
